Compliments of the Season - 2009

The members and committee of the IOWYCB have pleasure in offering you this selection of music of Christmas and the New Year: an album that has been complied with a view to bringing a touch of the traditional and nostalgic.Some tracks, like White Christmas, recorded most famously by Bing Crosby, come from a golden age in commercial music. A Fireside Chirstmas, a selection from Sammy Nestico, the staff arranger for Count Basie, epitomises that era with such evergreens as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, Winter Wonderland, I'll be Home for Christmas and Let it Snow, as does When a Child is Born, made popular by Johnny Mathis. Other music has its roots so far back in time that it is almost myth. Veni Emmanuel was written in the 9th century, when it was sung as the final of a series of antiphons, sung one each day from the beginning of Advent to Christmas Eve. Phillip Sparke's arrangement brings both the power and mystery of this ancient music to the modern-day wind band repertoire. The selection Christmas Festival, by master of light music Leroy Anderson, seems to combine old and new with its mixture of sacred and secular tunes, while his ever-popular Sleigh Ride is a 'must' on an album such as this.Clement C. Moore's "mere trifle" of a poem, The Night Before Christmas, has been popular ever since being published anonymously by a New York newspaper on December 23rd 1823. Arranger John Moss provides festive fun by accompanying Moore's text with some imaginative word painting in his setting for narrator and band.The 1934 film Lieutenant Kije is the tale of high jinx caused be mad Czar Paul who, by misreading the army honours list, created the fictitious officer. Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) wrote the incidental music, which he later turned into the orchestral suite containing his famous musical depiction of the Troika - a small sleigh pulled by one horse. Although not in its original form, arranger Hugh M. Stuart has nevertheless made a convincing adaptation of Prokoviev's Troika that would compliment any festival album.Nowhere is New Year celebrated the way that it is in Scotland! Indeed it seems that Hogmanay is now a global phenomenon with Auld Lang Syne being sung throughout the world at the strike of midnight with bagpipe music like Scotland the Brave playing over public address systems as part of festivities. The international appeal of traditional Scott's music is perhaps most evident in Highland Cathedral, not itself Scottish but German. Written in Berlin by Uli Roever and Michael Korb, this melody has won the hearts of Scotsmen and has been endorsed and recorded by most, if not all, of the famous bands in Scotland. Perhaps the most popular (and commercially successful) music for bagpipes to date is the hymn-tune Amazing Grace, which was recorded by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and awarded 14 golden records in 1972.Whatever your personal taste in Christmas music happens to be, we hope you enjoy the selection on this album!

On a Lighter Note! - 2003

This CD has been produced using items recorded during concerts as well as those recorded in the studio. As you listen, we invite you to ponder the question,'what is "light" music'? After all, not all serious music is "heavy" (we speak of "light classics"), and not all popular music is light (again, we speak of "heavy rock"). Music surrounds us. we simply can't get away from it. Whether in the supermarket, at home watching television, or in the car, we're bombarded with music in everything from advertising to films - not to mention our own music collection. Of course some music on this CD was written specifically as thematic or underscore material for film, like Mission: Impossible, or The Witches of Eastwick, contained in the selection John Williams: An Evening at Pops. ("Pops" in this case refers of course to the Boston Pops, where John Williams is often found conducting). In films, the music, since it is written to enhance the action on screen, was never intended for active listening, though has attained popularity. Similarly, in the earlier days of radio broadcast one could work to the accompaniment of light music issuing forth from, say, the BBC's 'Light Program". It's easy to imagine such music as Georgian Rumba in this way. So what criteria, then, do we measure a piece of music as being classified as "light"? Maybe it's the accessibility or the ease with which it may be listened, as with Ronald Binge's Elizabethan Serenade, or, in the way in which it has been orchestrated, its texture might be considered "light". Maybe, in a piece with the emotional depth of Alfred Reed's A Symphonic Prelude (an arrangement of the folk song Black is the Colour of my true Love's Hair), its comparative brevity. Some fragments of pieces from the serious repertoire, like the 2nd movements from Rodrigo's guitar concerto Aranjuez Mon Amour and All By Myself, arranged from the Adagio Sostenuto of Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto Op.18, have been popularised, thus giving these fragments the classification of "light" pieces in their own right. The opening item, James Curnow's Sovereign Variants, whilst being written specifically for the wind band medium, could undoubtedly be considered a "light" overture.Wind bands are inextricably linked with the "light" repertoire, and have been so since the 19th century when they performed the popular music of the day from bandstands the length and breadth of the country: a brisk 'two-step' being always fashionable! Of the two marches contained on this recording, neither is British in style. Soutullo's red-blodded Puenteareas Pasodoble Gallego is undoubtedly Spanish, coming from the small town of the same name near the Atlantic Coast, whilst Ostholsteiner Marsch reflects the importance of the North German area in the days of the Hansiatic League. (Both Puentereas and Ostholstein have been visited on tours in recent years, where the band helped affirm twinning links with both areas). Of course some music, like Zawinal's Birdland and Hosay's Atlantic Avenue exude a freshness that seems to encapsulate the youthfulness of the band and shall be enjoyed for generations to come by both band and audiences alike. So what, then, is light music? Is it something we should listen to passively as it plays in the background, or can we listen actively and appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone into it? Or perhaps we shouldn't seek to attach labels to music allow it to be enjoyed on a purely individual level.Whatever your thoughts happen to be, we sincerely hope you enjoy the programme of music offered on this CD on whatever level you may listen!
