Germany Tour: 8th to 18th August 2010
In August 2010, The Band went on an exciting 11 day tour of Ostholstein, Germany.
We travelled to Germany on a coach via the Harwich-Esbjerg ferry route - an 18 hour crossing which although extending the overall journey to 30 hours, was a much more pleasant way to travel compared to the 22 hour drive we had undertaken on past tours.
Accommodation was in Niendorf in the Youth Hostel where the band has stayed before in 2001 and also on previous visits in the 1980s. We undertook concerts on the seafront in Gromitz, at an official reception outside County Hall in Eutin, at the International Folklore Festival in Neustadt, at the Hansa-Park theme park in Sierksdorf, and finally at the Schutzengilde Hall in Neustadt. We also made informal visits to Lubeck, Berlin and Kiel.
There was also plenty of free time built into the itinerary for sightseeing, swimming, the beach, shopping and some pretty competitive games of tabletennis!
We are indebted to Ralf Hubner, chairman of the Isle of Wight - Ostholstein Twinning Association (Ostholstein group), who devoted a lot of his free time both before and during the tour to helping the Band organise the tour and also acting as our guide whilst there.
